A new social initiative in support of vulnerable groups is being launched by Emfasis Non-Profit in Heraklion, Crete. Particular concern is expressed for elderly individuals facing financial insecurity.
In Heraklion, Crete, members of the Emfasis Non-Profit team are preparing for a major food assistance campaign to benefit vulnerable citizens and their families.
Ms. Maria Karra, co-founder of Emfasis Non-Profit, speaking on the show “Dimosios” with Nikos Papadakis on Politica 89.8, referred to the planned initiatives on January 23-24, 2025, in the city of Heraklion, as well as the social issues and financial challenges families have faced in recent years. She also expressed concerns regarding elderly care and support.
Regarding the initiative in our city, on Thursday, January 23, the distribution of meals, hygiene kits, and personal medical supplies is scheduled for individuals experiencing visible homelessness. Additionally, food will be distributed for their companion animals.
The initiative involves Metropolitan College – IEK AKMI, represented by the General Director of Crete, Mr. Kostas Syllignakis. Meals will be prepared and packaged by Professor-Chef Mr. Stavros Karpathiotakis and his team.
On Friday, January 24, food and hygiene items will be distributed at three locations in the city. On this day, the initiative will be carried out with the participation of the Association of Women's Organizations of Heraklion and Prefecture, chaired by Ms. Mary Pachiadaki, who also serves as the President of the Crete Food Bank.

In the Knossos area, the distribution of products to vulnerable families will be carried out in collaboration with the Knossos Cultural Association and its President, Ms. Mara Panagiotaki, who also serves as Vice President of DEPANAL Heraklion.
On both days, adult leaders of the Eastern Crete Scout Association will assist with distribution efforts, under the leadership of Eastern Crete Scout Commissioner Mr. George Kounalakis.
The products will be sourced from a well-known local business, as part of efforts to support Heraklion’s local economy.
The initiative is coordinated and funded by Emfasis Non-Profit sponsors, led by Ms. Maria Karra. Coordination of the initiative in Heraklion is being managed by Emfasis’ local collaborator, Ms. Eleftheria Nionaki.
